Stephanie Gonley - violin

Stephanie Gonley has a wide-ranging career as concerto soloist, soloist/director of chamber orchestras, orchestra leader, recitalist and chamber musician.
She has appeared as a soloist with many of the leading orchestras in the UK, including the Royal Philharmonic with Vladimir Ashkenazy, London Philharmonic, Philharmonia, BBC Symphony, Manchester Camerata, National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, Hallé, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, BBC Scottish Symphony, BBC Welsh Symphony, Ulster orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra of the Opera North and at the BBC Promenade concerts.  In the spring of 2006 she gives a recital at London’s Wigmore Hall with pianist Martin Roscoe, as well as performing the Sibelius Violin Concerto with the London Philharmonic Orchestra.


Abroad, her concerto performances have been with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Hannover Radio Symphony, Orchestre de Chambre de Genève, Noord Nederlands Orkest (where she will return this season with conductor Roy Goodman), Regina Symphony (Canada), Norrköping Symphony (Sweden), Regensburg Philharmonic, Norwegian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Royal Flanders Philharmonic and Hong Kong Philharmonic amongst others.


Stephanie Gonley performs regularly with the English Chamber Orchestra as leader, soloist and director, and was director/soloist in her own series with the ECO at the Barbican Hall.
Until 2002, she was the leader of the Vellinger String Quartet, winners of the 1994 London International String Quartet Competition, and she still enjoys performing a wide range of chamber music with such ensembles as the Nash Ensemble, the English Chamber Orchestra Ensemble and the Fibonacci Sequence. She has taken part in many performances and broadcasts for the BBC and played at a variety of international festivals.

Her solo recordings include the Dvorák Romance with the ECO and Sir Charles Mackerras for EMI, the Sibelius Violin Concerto for BMG/Conifer and a CD of baroque repertoire with the ECO which she directed.

As director/soloist, Stephanie Gonley has performed with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the New Zealand Chamber Orchestra, the Ensemble Oriol Berlin in the Kammermusik Saal of the Berlin Philharmonie, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Lancashire Sinfonietta, the RTE Concert Orchestra and the Vancouver Symphony. Future appearances as director/soloist include a performance with the Manchester Camerata and a return to the Lancashire Sinfonietta.

As guest leader she has worked with the London Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, City Of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, Netherlands Chamber Orchestra and Danish Radio Sinfonietta.

Stephanie Gonley is currently Professor of Violin at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she also studied with David Takeno. She continued her studies with Dorothy DeLay (Juilliard) and Ilan Gronich (Hochschule, Berlin). Amongst other awards, she was a winner of the prestigious Shell-LSO National Scholarship.
